Iraq (Steven Bitner/USA)
I just wanted to post a short intro to let the Consilience Forum participants know that I am available to continue the conversation that we had last Thursday at the Embassy. I'd like to thank those of you that were there for your questions and participation. If you have anything additional that you'd like to ask or say, this is the place to do it.
Regards,
Steve

Hi Steve, thanks for taking time to 'blog' with us. I had to leave early during the presentation and didn't hear all the questions. I was wondering if the topic of education came up. I remember that you said something about building civil society. Is there a plan to introduce citizenship skills into the classroom? Maybe a debate club?
That's a good question. Education was a very big priority for the Coalition Provisional Authority, but we were focused on developing the infrastructure. As far as I know, we didn't get involved in determining the curriculum. That said, there were a lot of efforts by normal Iraqis to develop their civic society by establishing non-governmental organizations and community groups. For the first time in their lives they could meet and gather without the fear of their government putting them in jail.
It's all about 'trust' then isn't it? You mentioned the word 'fear' in connection with civic phenomena (i.e. community groups) -- what I hear is that 'trust' is crucial, and that a legacy remains. What is being done to nurture this 'social capital?'
