Adventures with a palm
Dear Consilience Forum Members and Friends!
"Greetings from Jerusalem Ave" (Warsaw, Poland) by Joanna Rajkowska
We would like to invite you to to exchange your opinions about the topic of our current CF presentation - public art. For an intro to some key ideas about public art, there is a good article by Jack Becker.
For a good place to start to read about contemporary thought on Public Art, check out the Public Art Review.
What is public art for you? What are your expectations towards an art piece displayed in the public space? What do you think about public art displayed in Warsaw so far? Have you heard about any famous presentations and happenings in the other cities?
There has been abit of support from around Poland for the Palm.
Share your views with us and other readers. Comment on others' opinions, as well as the content of the presentation.

Very interesting topic and some important ideas were introduced...Joanna said that in 1990s, artists saw themseleves as citizens, after being activists in the 80s and a bit marginalized (on fringes of society) -- but what happens to art when the artist decides to work within a system? doesn't art become just as lazy and cynical as most citizens?
Yes interesting, I work next to the palm and when I take a taxi, I tell him "to the roundabout with the palm" and he does not get lost, eventhough now it is not a Palm, just a trunk !!! And an advise, though I was told not to give advices when not asked to. "There are only two forces that unite men -- fear and interest". be good !!!
When artist decides to work within a community, he/she always remains a part of the system. From within you can be much more effective. You know the community problems, you can respond... Whether you stay lazy or cynical – it always depends on you. You can be lazy and cynical being an anarchist...
Ok, but who *really* gets to decide what art is? is it a democratic process or do the elite in a community decide for us?
